Few details found in Ruben Gallego's redacted divorce papers

PHOENIX — A recent release of U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego’s divorce papers provided minimal insight into his separation from Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. The documents were made public following the Arizona Supreme Court’s denial of a motion to keep them sealed.

Yavapai County Superior Court published a heavily-redacted 465-page file on Thursday. Much of the information regarding child custody, asset division, and child support remains concealed, limiting the understanding of the couple’s arrangement post-separation.

Ruben Gallego initially filed for divorce in December 2016 and later sought to keep proceedings private to safeguard his son’s privacy. The court documents also reveal a memo from the City of Phoenix, dated May 2024, requesting that Mayor Gallego’s residential addresses be withheld from public records due to multiple threats against her and her family since she took office.

In the finalized divorce decree, the Gallegos affirmed there was no significant domestic violence during their marriage. Additionally, both parties completed a parental education course as mandated by Arizona law.

During a June court hearing, Judge John Napper reviewed the case thoroughly and remarked that the divorce papers appeared unremarkable. “This looks to me like one of the most garden-variety divorce files I have ever seen,” he stated, indicating a lack of sensational details that might capture public interest.
