Residents Rejoice as Phoenix Hotel Closes Its Doors, Reclaiming Their Neighborhood

PHOENIX — Following a lengthy investigation into drug and prostitution activities, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced the seizure of the notorious Royal Inn hotel, a site long associated with crime.

Residents near I-17 and West Bethany Home Road have expressed relief over the closure, viewing it as a significant step toward revitalizing their community.

With boards now covering its entrances, the Royal Inn stands defunct—a symbol of change. Jeff Spellman, a local leader, remarked, “Kids walking to school shouldn’t have to see this,” emphasizing the negative impact the hotel had on the neighborhood.

Betty Guardado, the Phoenix District Five Councilwoman, echoed these sentiments, stating that the closure would restore a sense of safety to local families. “Parents want their kids to play outside and feel secure,” she said, reflecting on the community’s struggles.

The property had become a focal point for illegal activities, causing it to be branded as a haven for vice. The successful seizure followed years of collaboration between the Phoenix Police Department and the FBI, marking a significant victory for law enforcement.

Spellman, involved with the Violence Impact Project Coalition, likened the ongoing battle against crime to a game of Whac-A-Mole but described the Royal Inn’s closure as a critical strike. “One bite at a time,” he remarked, recognizing the substantial impact of this development.

Despite this success, community leaders acknowledge that more needs to be done. “We’re not done yet,” Guardado stated, vowing to continue addressing the issues that plague the 27th Avenue Corridor. Residents are committed to reclaiming their neighborhoods, demonstrating resilience amid ongoing challenges.
