Rep. Wilmeth Unveils Game-Changing Bill to Support Veterans Battling Traumatic Brain Injuries and PTSD

An Arizona legislator is taking significant steps to support veterans facing mental health challenges. Arizona State Representative Justin Wilmeth recently introduced HB 2871, a bill aimed at allocating $10 million for clinical research focused on ibogaine, a substance showing potential in treating traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
In a press statement, Wilmeth emphasized the urgency of addressing veterans’ mental health issues. “Our military heroes put their lives on the line to defend our freedoms,” he stated, “yet when they come home, too many are left suffering in silence. Traditional treatments have fallen short, and the reality is stark—veterans with TBI and PTSD are at an alarmingly high risk of suicide.” He believes ibogaine treatment could offer real hope and healing.
Wilmeth further expressed the critical nature of research in this area. “Veterans who sustained brain injuries in combat shouldn’t have to leave the country to access treatment that could change their lives,” he said. He underscored Arizona’s potential to lead in exploring alternative treatment options, aiming for a future where veterans can receive the care they need for their invisible wounds.
Ibogaine, derived from a West African plant, is gaining attention for its ability to alleviate PTSD symptoms and neurological damage. Veterans like Congressman Morgan Luttrell and retired SEAL Marcus Luttrell have credited ibogaine for aiding in their recovery from the psychological and physical effects of combat, while former Texas Governor Rick Perry has called it a “lifeline” for veterans.
If HB 2871 is enacted, it would mandate the Arizona Department of Health Services to issue grants to a qualified research institution, tasked with conducting a clinical study on ibogaine’s effectiveness in addressing TBI and PTSD symptoms.
