State Representative Quang Nguyen, a Republican lawmaker, has raised significant concerns regarding a municipal firearms ordinance in Sedona. His recent actions include sending a letter to Mayor Scott Jablow and city council members that questions the legality of Ordinance 12.30.090.

The ordinance in question prohibits the carrying or discharging of firearms and projectile weapons in parks, trails, and open spaces. Representative Nguyen argues this restriction may infringe upon Second Amendment rights and conflicts with Arizona’s state laws.

In his press release, he urged Sedona officials to reassess the ordinance to ensure it aligns with Arizona law, emphasizing, “Local ordinances must not infringe upon the constitutional rights of Arizonans.” He referenced Arizona Revised Statutes § 13-3108, asserting that Sedona’s prohibition on carrying firearms is inconsistent with state legal standards.

Nguyen pointed out that while cities have the ability to enact certain restrictions, these must meet specific statutory conditions. He asked city leaders to perform a legal analysis of Ordinance 12.30.090 and to communicate their findings to him, indicating a willingness to collaborate on any necessary adjustments.

This inquiry represents a broader dialogue around gun rights in Arizona, reflecting the ongoing tension between local governance and state laws regarding firearms.
