Rep. Martinez Champions Biker Safety Bill Following Son’s Devastating Crash

State Rep. Teresa Martinez, a Casa Grande Republican, is facing a personal crisis after her son, John, was hospitalized due to a motorcycle accident earlier this month. This incident has underscored her commitment to motorcycle safety amidst a rise in serious crashes reported in the area.
John, 22, suffered significant injuries when the brakes on his motorcycle malfunctioned during a ride in Tempe. “He hit his head on the pavement, and the damage to his helmet shows just how hard he struck,” Martinez recounted. The accident resulted in a severe tibia fracture, requiring surgical intervention with nails and screws, along with additional injuries to his fibula and ankle.
To assist with medical co-payments and living expenses during his recovery, Martinez has established a GoFundMe campaign. The fundraiser has nearly met its $5,000 target. “I feel so supported… when the community rallies behind somebody they don’t even know, it makes you feel like we’re connected,” she expressed.
Prior to the accident, Martinez co-sponsored Senate Bill 1107, aimed at maintaining the Motorcycle Safety Fund, which promotes awareness and reduces safety gear costs for riders. “I believed in supporting the motorcycle safety fund,” she stated. The bill includes provisions to ensure the fund’s financial resources are solely dedicated to safety initiatives.
The incident has prompted Martinez to consider new legislation focused on motorcycle safety. “I want to make it as safe as possible on our roads for everyone, including motorcycle riders,” she asserted. Future legislative efforts geared towards protecting riders are now a priority for the lawmaker, reflecting her personal investment in the issue.
