Rep. Crane’s New Law Paves Easiest Path for Veterans to Join Trucking Industry
By Matthew Holloway |
On October 1st, the Veteran Improvement Commercial Driver License Act (S. 656) was signed into law, aiming to support U.S. veterans entering the trucking sector. With bipartisan backing, the bill, initiated by Congressman Eli Crane (R-AZ) and sponsored by Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE), effortlessly passed through the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate.
This new legislation allows for immediate access to GI benefits for new trucking schools, expediting the training process for veterans. Previously, these institutions faced a two-year regulatory delay after opening. Now, if the primary facility is approved, expansion can proceed without similar wait times, effectively increasing the pool of CDL-trained veterans ready for employment.
In a press release, Rep. Crane emphasized the bill’s significance, stating, “This will allow veterans more accessibility to CDL schools, reducing commuting times, leading to high-paying careers in the trucking industry.” His commitment to enhance opportunities for veterans in rural Arizona underlines the essential nature of this legislation.
Echoing this sentiment, Rep. Edwards remarked, “It’s high time we take meaningful steps toward better supporting a veteran’s transition into the civilian workforce. The Veteran Improvement CDL Act helps to eliminate barriers that impede veterans from achieving their American dream.”
Senator Fischer added, “Our veterans deserve every opportunity to participate fully in the American dream they’ve fought to protect. This legislation makes it easier for them to secure CDL licenses and earn sustainable incomes.”
Industry experts have also recognized the act’s potential impact. Chris Spear, President and CEO of the American Trucking Associations, praised the passage as a critical step toward addressing the ongoing truck driver shortage. “We are appreciative of the leadership on this important bill, which will help veterans secure rewarding careers,” he noted.
The bipartisan nature of this legislation marks a significant collaboration in Congress, with far-reaching benefits for veterans entering a crucial workforce sector.
