Rep. Crane’s Landmark Bill to Hand Over Federal Land to Local Communities Advances in Committee

Congressman Eli Crane (R-AZ-2) announced on Wednesday that his proposed legislation, H.R. 3047, is progressing through Congress. The bill aims to transfer federal land within the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest to the communities of Pinedale and Alpine in northern Arizona. Its primary purpose is to address the critical need for expanded cemetery space in both towns, which have struggled for over a decade due to federal land restrictions.
The legislation is co-sponsored by Congressman Paul Gosar (R-AZ-9) and proposes to convey 2.5 acres of National Forest System land to Navajo County for the Pinedale Cemetery and 8.06 acres to Apache County for the Alpine Cemetery. Both communities have found themselves unable to acquire suitable burial grounds nearby, forcing residents to inter their loved ones far from home.
Navajo County Supervisor Daryl Seymore expressed gratitude for the bill, stating, “The community of Pinedale has a long and rich pioneer history. This bill will allow families to lay their loved ones to rest in the place that their family member loved so much.”
Representative Crane emphasized the bill’s significance, noting, “These communities have storied histories, and they deserve to lay their loved ones to rest in the place that means so much to them.” The bill recently passed out of the House Committee on Natural Resources and is expected to be considered on the House floor soon.
Crane recognized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for its support, calling the legislation a testament to the community’s strength. He conveyed appreciation to Supervisors Seymore and Nelson for their leadership throughout the process. Apache County Supervisor Nelson Davis highlighted the urgency of the need for additional cemetery space in his remarks, underscoring the importance of the legislation.
Following the committee’s approval, House Committee on Natural Resources Chairman Bruce Westerman remarked, “Oftentimes, the smallest solutions can have the most meaning. Congressman Crane’s legislation will help communities properly lay to rest their loved ones.” He commended Crane for his thoughtful approach to addressing constituents’ needs.
