Rep. Blattman Gains Momentum as Climate Advocates Rally for Green New Deal in Arizona

A pivotal legislative district in the Phoenix-metro area is expected to significantly influence the future of the Arizona State Legislature. State Representative Seth Blattman, a Democrat, is campaigning for reelection in Legislative District 9.
Blattman has garnered endorsements from several progressive organizations, including the National Organization for Women Arizona, AEA Fund for Public Education, Progressive Turnout Project, and the Jane Fonda Climate PAC. His endorsement from the Fonda PAC is particularly noteworthy, as it aligns him with efforts to combat climate change.
On August 7, Blattman expressed his pride in receiving this endorsement, emphasizing the importance of sustainable policies for future generations. He stated, “I am incredibly honored to announce the endorsement by the Jane Fonda Climate PAC! Their tireless efforts in combating climate change and advocating for sustainable policies are crucial for our planet’s future.”
However, the PAC’s mission may raise concerns among constituents. Fonda articulates a strong stance on climate advocacy, stating, “Our planet is on fire and our leaders are failing us, so if we can’t change the minds of the people in power, we need to change the people in power.” The PAC aims to defeat those who support fossil fuel interests and elect climate champions nationwide.
Among the initiatives promoted by the PAC is the Green New Deal, linked closely to U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders. He argues for immediate climate action, framing the crisis as not only a challenge but an opportunity for social equity. His proposed decade of the Green New Deal encompasses a comprehensive approach impacting various policy areas.
Historically, Arizona has resisted extreme climate change measures, primarily due to its Republican leadership. Yet, Blattman’s voting record suggests he may support more progressive climate policies if Democrats regain control. Notably, he opposed HCR 2050, aimed at protecting energy sources from restrictive laws, and voted against HCR 2018, which sought to limit government fees based on vehicle mileage.
Additionally, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, another of Blattman’s endorsements, champions the Green New Deal. The organization highlights its support for progressive leaders like Elizabeth Warren, who calls for immediate and substantial climate action through an ambitious legislative framework.
Legislative District 9 is one of Arizona’s most competitive, with only a 2.6% vote margin between Democrats and Republicans in recent elections. Democrats have claimed victory in five out of the last nine contests, while Republicans have won four.
Blattman is running alongside Lorena Austin for one of the district’s two House seats, facing Republican challengers Mary Ann Mendoza and Kylie Barber.
