REP. ANDY BIGGS: CCP’s Land Grabs in Arizona Must Be Stopped

By Rep. Andy Biggs (AZ-05) |
The United States faces a growing challenge from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which threatens national security in the twenty-first century. During this critical juncture, former President Donald J. Trump emerged as a steadfast opponent of the CCP, steering the nation away from potential collapse. As I pursue the governorship of Arizona, I am committed to emulating this strong leadership. My goal is to work with the State Legislature to enact a bill, within my first 60 days in office, banning Chinese government ownership of real estate in Arizona.
Current Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has exhibited a troubling lack of resolve against Chinese influence. Her administration has not taken the necessary steps to safeguard our citizens from potential espionage and subversion attempts orchestrated by the CCP. This dangerous infiltration strategy includes securing land near vital military and energy sites to facilitate intelligence-gathering.
At the federal level, I have actively supported the No American Land for Communist China Act to combat this incursion. Additionally, Arizona’s Legislature recently approved Senate Bill 1109, a critical measure aimed at bolstering our security against global threats. This bill underscores the need to protect vital infrastructure from foreign influence detrimental to our national interests.
It is noteworthy that not a single Democrat backed this national security initiative, and Governor Hobbs ultimately vetoed it. This raises questions: Why would she allow a hostile nation to acquire land in Arizona, jeopardizing our security?
Arizona hosts significant assets, including one of the nation’s largest nuclear power plants and numerous military facilities. These installations are crucial not only for the state but also for national defense. While our high-tech industry continues to flourish, strong leadership is required to protect these key infrastructures.
Governor Hobbs has been ineffective in responding to the CCP’s threats. Incidents involving Chinese nationals engaged in espionage against U.S. military installations are alarming. Additionally, the Chinese military’s aggressive preparations concerning Taiwan signal a growing risk. The recent spy balloon incident, which traversed sensitive military areas, underscores the inadequacy of current leadership in safeguarding U.S. airspace.
President Joe Biden’s inaction mirrors Governor Hobbs’ failures, both exhibiting a troubling reluctance to confront foreign threats. This pattern of timidity endangers both the state and the country.
Arizona requires a decisive leader dedicated to the safety of its citizens. It is evident that Governor Hobbs prioritizes accommodating the CCP over protecting Arizonans.
