Red Rock State Park offers classes and hikes

Red Rock State Park has revealed an exciting lineup of events for May, engaging visitors with nature and history.

On Sunday, May 11, at 5:40 p.m., the park will host a Moonlight Hike. Participants will explore the stunning landscapes under the glow of the moon while knowledgeable volunteer naturalists share insights on topics such as archaeology and botany. The hike covers about 2 to 2.5 miles and lasts approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. A $15 registration fee is required, and participants must be at least 12 years old. Arrivals should occur 30 minutes prior to the start. Suitable attire for cooler temperatures, closed-toe shoes, water, and a flashlight are recommended. Reservations open on May 23 by calling (928) 282-6907.

Earlier that day, at 1 p.m., a Geology Hike will offer an in-depth look into the area’s geological history. Nestled at the base of the Mogollon Rim, this hike is framed by dramatic vistas shaped over millennia. Guided by volunteers, the two-hour hike begins with a presentation in the theatre. It’s included with park entrance fees, but reservations are needed. Participants should bring water and appropriate footwear for a rewarding experience.

The Archaeology Hike, scheduled for May 18 at 1 p.m., unveils the ancient Sinagua culture, prevalent between 1100 and 1425. Attendees will learn about significant archaeological features and the various cultures that utilized the park’s resources. This informative excursion follows a similar format, starting with a presentation in the theatre and lasting about two hours. Reservations are a must, and the program is included in park entrance fees.

Another highlight, the Ethnobotany Walk on May 25 at 1 p.m., delves into the relationships between local flora and human cultures. This event bridges past and present, exploring how native plants connect to both Indigenous peoples and modern life. The walk lasts between 1.5 to 2 hours, and participants are encouraged to wear suitable hiking gear and bring water. Reservations can also be made via the park’s contact number.

In addition to scheduled hikes, the park offers a Daily Guided Nature Hike at 10 a.m. every morning. Led by a volunteer naturalist, this walk covers various topics, including wildlife and archaeology, and poses no need for prior reservations. This program is included with park entrance fees and is a perfect way to begin a day at Red Rock.

Bird lovers can participate in weekly Bird Walks every Wednesday and Saturday at 8 a.m. These walks cater to all skill levels and require no reservations. The diverse avian population along Oak Creek highlights the importance of this area to bird enthusiasts. Those walking independently can find excellent birdwatching opportunities from the Hummingbird Patio or the Visitor Center roof.

Red Rock State Park continues to be a valuable destination for nature lovers and history buffs alike, offering immersive experiences that connect visitors with the rich natural and cultural heritage of the region.
