Red-Light Runner Injured, School Worker Assessed After Collision: Authorities

A traffic collision involving a Maricopa Unified School District maintenance Chevy Silverado 2500 HD truck and a Kia Soul occurred today at approximately 8:30 a.m. The incident took place at a John Wayne Parkway intersection near the entrances to the Desert Cedars and Alterra neighborhoods.
The Maricopa Police Department has reviewed traffic camera footage to understand the circumstances of the crash.
According to Police Department spokesperson Monica Williams, “It appears the White Kia was traveling south on John Wayne Parkway, ran the red light, and collided with the Chevy as it was turning north from Desert Cedars/Alterra Parkway.”
Both involved drivers were transported to hospitals as a precaution. A spokesperson for MUSD, Mishell Terry, confirmed that the school district employee is undergoing a routine medical evaluation.
The airbag in the Kia Soul deployed upon impact. Eyewitness Evandra Spruell, a 42-year-old resident of Alterra, reported seeing the Kia run a red light, a detail corroborated by police investigations.
Another witness, Jordan Coleman from Phoenix, noted, “The Kia Soul decided to turn late, not in the turning lane, then the truck got hit.”
As the investigation by the Maricopa Police Department continues, the condition of both drivers remains unknown.
