Records reveal how police identified suspect in murder of attorney in Arcadia neighborhood

PHOENIX — The investigation into the murder of a Valley attorney last Friday has led detectives to identify Christopher Eaves as the primary suspect. Eyewitness accounts and video evidence played crucial roles in the police’s swift actions.

Fifty-one-year-old James Arthur Eaves was shot outside his home near 44th Street and Camelback Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered five shell casings in the driveway and damage to the garage door, indicating a violent confrontation.

According to court records, a witness reported hearing multiple gunshots and observed a white BMW exiting the area shortly thereafter. This witness provided police with the vehicle’s license plate number, which was registered to Christopher Eaves.

Surveillance footage from the victim’s residence captured the white BMW’s arrival and an individual, identified in the records as Eaves, exiting the car while brandishing a firearm.

While investigators processed the crime scene, both Christopher and the victim’s parents arrived. Authorities detained Christopher and discovered a sweatshirt in the parents’ vehicle matching that worn by the suspect in the footage. Despite being confronted by police, Christopher declined to answer questions.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and police records indicate that the victim’s parents informed officers that Christopher had left their home that morning in the white BMW. He returned later, reportedly following news of the investigation involving James.

A search of Christopher’s bedroom revealed a firearm, leading to his arrest. He has since been booked into the Maricopa County jail on murder charges, with a bail set at $1.5 million cash-only.
