Record Highs at Risk: Will the First Week of 2025 Break New Ground?

PHOENIX — Phoenix is on track to hit a forecast high of 80 degrees on Friday, exceeding the previous record set in 1989 by one degree. Similar conditions may also lead to record highs at the Grand Canyon, while Flagstaff, Payson, and Sedona anticipate temperatures just shy of record levels. However, an increase in cloud cover could inhibit the potential for these high temperatures.
These warmer temperatures will be transient. A weather system moving in from the north is expected to pull desert highs down to the lower 70s by Saturday. Additionally, the high country will face windier conditions as the weekend begins.
By the middle of next week, temperatures are forecasted to trend towards seasonal averages. Notably, no precipitation, including rain or mountain snow, is expected in the upcoming week.
