Q&A: Rep. Yassamin Ansari on Eloy detention center, El Salvador and the new travel ban

Rep. Yassamin Ansari has made headlines during her first five months in Congress, focusing on immigration policies and human rights. The Democratic representative for Arizona’s 3rd District has quickly established herself in the political arena.

Recently, Ansari visited El Salvador, advocating for the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongfully deported. She has actively opposed the latest travel ban affecting individuals from 19 countries that went into effect on June 9.

The representative also toured a detention center in Eloy, Arizona, where she reported disturbing conditions. “Many detainees lack reliable access to essentials like food and medical care. They described overcrowded, moldy cells and harsh treatment from staff,” Ansari stated.

CoreCivic, the for-profit company operating the detention center, defended its practices, claiming adherence to federal detention standards. In contrast, nonprofit organizations, including the Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project, echoed Ansari’s concerns, highlighting long-standing reports of abuse and mistreatment.

In February, Ansari introduced her inaugural legislation, a resolution celebrating the contributions of immigrants and opposing discriminatory immigration policies. This resolution advocates for humane policies prioritizing family unity and a pathway to citizenship.

In an interview, Ansari emphasized the need for a shift in immigration policy towards compassion and justice. “The administration’s overreach is waking people up to the realities of mass deportation,” she stated, signaling hope for future changes.

When discussing further actions, Ansari suggested bipartisan cooperation for comprehensive immigration reform. She stressed the importance of tangible solutions, including pathways for Dreamers and protections for refugees and asylum seekers.

Answering queries about her visit to the Eloy center, Ansari asserted the importance of continued attention to the situation, stating, “We can’t allow other issues to overshadow the inhumane conditions faced by those in detention.” She also noted plans for future follow-ups to address the concerns raised during her visit.

Regarding the travel ban, Ansari highlighted the complexities of the current legislation, expressing caution about its legal challenges. She pointed out the hypocrisy in U.S. policies that prevent asylum seekers from fleeing oppressive regimes.

Ansari’s recent trip to El Salvador also illuminated the economic motivations behind immigration issues, noting that private prison companies are profiting significantly from the current policies.

As the political landscape evolves, Ansari remains focused on pressing issues in the immigration sector. As a fresh voice in Congress, she stands committed to advocating for vulnerable communities and reforming outdated systems.
