Public School Highlights — September 2024

Glendale Union High School District (GUHSD) urges families to enroll for the upcoming school year. With nine nationally recognized high schools, all ranked among America’s best according to U.S. News & World Report, GUHSD offers an excellent educational experience. The district emphasizes a strong academic curriculum complemented by championship athletics, extracurricular activities, and advanced STEM programs.
New students can still register for the 2024-25 school year, with comprehensive enrollment details available on the district’s website. Notably, the Class of 2024 accrued over 10,000 college credits last year, demonstrating GUHSD’s commitment to college readiness. Through Advanced Placement and dual enrollment programs, students earned an impressive 10,968 college credits, along with 859 industry certifications, equipping them for post-secondary education.
Attendance matters significantly, as missing just two days a month can equate to a loss of 10 percent of the school year. GUHSD advocates for regular attendance, emphasizing its role in fostering a positive learning environment for all students.
In the Madison School District, a job fair is scheduled for October 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Madison District Office. The district actively seeks bus drivers, special education paraprofessionals, and more, offering competitive pay and professional development opportunities.
Additionally, Jessica Mooney, a second-grade teacher at Madison Simis, recently received the 12News A+ Teacher award. Nominated by a former student’s parent, her inclusive teaching style has transformed the learning experience of her students, fostering both academic and social growth.
Portia Francois from North High School has garnered recognition as a district-wide Student of the Year in the Phoenix Union High School District. With a weighted GPA of 4.472 and impactful leadership roles in athletics, she has made significant contributions to both her academic and school communities. Her advocacy for a new bell schedule underscores her commitment to student representation and involvement.
In a display of educational excellence, Jennifer Spector of Desert View Elementary School is one of the top ten semifinalists for the 2025 AEF Arizona Teacher of the Year Award, selected from over 600 nominations. She will be honored at the AEF awards ceremony in October.
Mountain View School has partnered with the Phoenix Suns and Mercury to advance its Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program. During an assembly, the teams donated basketballs to students who excelled in PBIS and academics, creating a celebratory environment.
Orangewood School was chosen to participate in the USDA’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for the 2024-25 school year, promoting healthy eating habits among students through free fresh produce. The Washington Resource Information Center (WRIC) at three WESD schools provides essential resources, workshops, and early literacy programs for families with children under five.
