President Jimmy Carter to Receive Final Honors in State at U.S. Capitol Next Week

Funeral services for former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia, will occur from January 4 to January 9, according to the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region.
Recognized for being the longest-living U.S. president, Carter’s memorial events will start in his hometown. A public viewing will take place from January 4 to January 7, allowing mourners to pay their respects before his body is transported to Washington, D.C.
On January 7, Carter’s body will arrive at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, followed by a procession to the U.S. Navy Memorial. Notably, Carter served in the Navy and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, underscoring his commitment to public service.
A funeral procession will lead to the U.S. Capitol in the afternoon. A service is scheduled there at 3 p.m. for members of Congress to honor Carter’s legacy. During this period, the public can pay respects while he lies in state, starting January 7 from 7 p.m. until midnight, and continuing on January 8 from 7 a.m. until 7 a.m. on January 9.
The funeral proceedings will conclude at Washington National Cathedral with a service at 10 a.m. on January 9. President Joe Biden is expected to deliver a eulogy, highlighting Carter’s significant impact on the nation.
After the ceremonies in Washington, Carter’s family will return to Georgia. A private funeral service and interment will be held in Plains, honoring the former president’s deep roots in his community.
