Police: Car crashes into Buckeye apartment

BUCKEYE, Ariz. — A man is in custody following a dramatic incident in which he crashed a vehicle into an apartment building and fled the scene, Buckeye police report. The collision occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on a Monday at Cholla Ranch Apartments, located near the intersection of Miller and Baseline Roads.

According to the Buckeye Fire Department, the driver was heading south on Miller Road when he veered off course and struck the building. Witness Daymien Llamas described the moment, stating, “All I heard was just a big crash and bang, almost something like metal.”

The impact caused significant damage, destroying a patio and a wall of a first-floor apartment. Iven Davis, a resident, recounted how debris from the collision shattered glass and struck his mother, emphasizing the danger involved.

Another witness, Breanna Rhea, reported seeing the driver speeding erratically moments before the crash. “He had to have been going at least, I’m going to say about 80 (miles per hour),” she estimated. Witness accounts suggest the driver was familiar with dangerous driving maneuvers prior to the accident.

Emergency responders found the vehicle’s front end severely damaged, yet the driver managed to evade police initially. Authorities later apprehended him at a nearby residence, where he now faces multiple felony charges. His passenger, a woman, was taken to the hospital but is expected to recover.

“For them to come through the wall and survive, just thank the big man upstairs,” Davis remarked, reflecting on the incident’s potential for greater harm. Meanwhile, the damaged apartments have been boarded up, leaving residents displaced until further assessments deem them safe for occupancy.
