Police records reveal new details after Casa Grande city van runs over elderly woman

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. — A family in Casa Grande is grappling with the tragic death of their grandmother, 81-year-old Eva Berger, who was struck and killed by a city van last March. The incident raises serious questions for the family as they seek closure.

According to a police report, Berger suffered severe head trauma and died in an ambulance en route to the hospital after the collision on March 31. The driver, who has not been identified as charges have yet to be filed, stated she had just dropped Berger off at her residence when her attention was diverted by another passenger. Upon turning back, she claimed to have not seen anyone in front of her.

“It’s still kind of like, ‘Wow.’ It’s a tragedy what happened,” expressed Antonio Berger, her grandson. His family feels the driver should have been more attentive, especially given the nature of her role.

Officers on the scene described the driver as “hysterical,” struggling to form coherent sentences. Yet, the grandsons believe that accountability is essential. “You take that job on and there’s a role you’re supposed to play,” Antonio added.

As the family mourns, they wish to honor their grandmother’s vibrant life rather than dwell on her untimely death. “Her legacy will live on and we will cherish her every day. It’s not going to be the same without her here,” said Gregory Berger.

The Department of Public Safety is currently leading the investigation, which remains open with no new developments as of Saturday night. In the meantime, the Berger family continues to advocate for awareness of the incident’s impact on their lives.
