Police officer in 'critical condition' after shooting in Apache Junction

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. — An officer sustained injuries during a gunfire exchange with a suspect on Monday, as reported by the Apache Junction Police Department.

This incident prompted authorities to block off access to the area near Ironwood Drive and Elliot Road in the morning. The police stated that a suspect is currently in custody and receiving treatment for “life-threatening” injuries, while the officer has been described as in critical condition.

Police were initially called to reports of a man exhibiting aggressive behavior with a weapon. Upon encountering the 37-year-old suspect near Radiance Avenue, he allegedly exited his vehicle with a gun, leading to the ensuing exchange of gunfire.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing three to five gunshots followed by commands from officers urging the suspect to “calm down.” The rapid police response was evident, as a large presence was seen at the intersection during the event.

The Mesa Police Department has taken over the investigation. Notably, the injured officer has been with the Apache Junction Police Department for three years.
