Pima Volleyball Stages Epic Comeback to Shock Mesa in Thrilling Tiebreaker

The Pima Community College volleyball team achieved a significant victory, overcoming a tough challenge against No. 15-ranked Mesa Community College in a thrilling match held on Wednesday. The Aztecs, now at 7-5 overall and 4-1 in the ACCAC, triumphed in five sets, fighting back after dropping the first two (26-28, 27-29, 25-23, 25-18, 15-5).
From the outset, the match proved to be intense, with a staggering 46 ties recorded throughout the contest at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium. The Aztecs struggled in the first set, falling behind 18-13, but displayed resilience as they clawed their way back. They saved a set point while trailing 24-22, ultimately forcing extra play, but succumbed to a late push by the Thunderbirds.
In the second set, Pima initially took control, leading by as much as six points. However, Mesa rallied to tie it at 18-18, and after numerous lead changes, the Thunderbirds edged out the Aztecs again to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
As the match progressed, Pima’s determination became evident. The third set highlighted their tenacity, as the teams exchanged points back and forth. After trailing 21-19, the Aztecs surged ahead, clinching the set and narrowing the match deficit to 2-1.
The fourth set was a pivotal moment. Tied at 14-14, the Aztecs pulled ahead, limiting Mesa’s scoring opportunities and forcing a decisive tiebreaker. Confidence surged as they established an early lead in the tiebreaker, propelled by two aces from sophomore Jasmin Joseph.
Pima’s collective effort culminated in a dominant final push, finishing with five straight points to seal the victory. Freshman Maggie McReynolds led the team with 25 kills, while Haylee Gilleland contributed 24 kills, two blocks, and two aces. Sophomore Kenna Simon also made her mark with 13 kills, and Joseph’s impressive defensive performance included 37 digs and four aces.
The Aztecs are set to continue their exciting season as they prepare to host No. 6 ranked Scottsdale Community College this Friday at 7 p.m.
