Pima Men Dominate with 99-Point Victory, Led by Max Majerle’s 24-Point Surge
The Pima Community College men’s basketball team continued their impressive season with a commanding 150-51 victory over UTU Academy. This non-conference showdown took place on Monday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium, where the No. 6-ranked Aztecs showcased their skills.
The match was marked by an explosive performance, with the Aztecs leading by as much as 101 points towards the end of the game. At one point, the score reached 148-47, underscoring the team’s dominance.
Pima surged ahead early, crafting a stunning 26-4 run after being up 23-12 at the 14:11 mark of the first half. By halftime, the Aztecs had amassed 81 points, leaving UTU Academy trailing at 30.
In a dominant second half, Pima outscored their opponents 31-3 during one stretch. The Aztecs’ bench also played a pivotal role, contributing significantly to their overall score.
Sophomore Max Majerle led all scorers with 24 points, shooting an impressive 8 for 12 from the field. Kota Benson added 16 points, showcasing his shooting prowess with 4 for 5 from three-point range, along with eight assists and five rebounds. Freshman Isaac Johnson also tallied 16 points, going perfect 7 for 7 from the field, and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench.
Cooper Jones added 15 points, hitting three 3-pointers, while Wes Ball contributed 13 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Cohen Gonzales accounted for 12 points and four assists, and freshman Aidan Schmidt scored 11 points. Freshmen Khalon Johnson and Kaelum Brown each chipped in with 10 points.
The Aztecs excelled at the free-throw line, going 26 for 31, and shot 62 percent for the game, hitting 58 of 93 attempts. Following this win, the team will take a break for the holidays before returning to action for the Aztec Holiday Classic from December 28-30. Their next game is against Central Arizona College on Saturday, December 28, at 2 p.m.
