Pima County Jail Guard Faces Assault Charges for Alleged Inmate Attack
Pima County Corrections Officer Ayden Escarrega, aged 20, was arrested on Wednesday evening following a violent incident involving an inmate at the county jail over the weekend, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
The altercation occurred during the booking process on Saturday when an inmate displayed “uncooperative behavior.” While the inmate was on the ground, Escarrega reportedly struck him multiple times in the face. The name of the inmate has not been disclosed, and details regarding the extent of his injuries remain unclear.
In response to the incident, detectives from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department’s Robbery Assault Team were dispatched to investigate.
Escarrega faces charges of aggravated assault and has been processed into the Pima County Jail, where he has served for the past 19 months. Deputy Keith Bee confirmed that Escarrega had no previous disciplinary issues during his tenure.
Following his arrest, Escarrega was released on his own recognizance and has since been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation, as stated by officials.
