Pima County Attorney taps Kimberly Hunley as chief deputy

Kimberly Hunley has been appointed as the chief deputy for the Pima County Attorney’s Office (PCAO), according to officials on Friday. Bringing decades of experience in prosecution and administrative roles, Hunley is expected to provide significant leadership to the office.

Her tenure begins on May 12, 2025, following the departure of former Chief Deputy Baird Greene, who spent 30 years at PCAO. A graduate of the University of Arizona’s James E. Rogers College of Law, Hunley’s career began in Pima County, where she served as a prosecutor for eight years.

Before her current appointment, Hunley held roles in private practice and worked in Santa Cruz County, serving as a prosecutor, chief civil deputy, and chief deputy for the past 15 years. Additionally, she has experience as a senior litigation attorney for the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, where she handled both criminal defense and complex civil litigation.

Last year, Hunley was involved in a high-profile case, leading the prosecution against George Alan Kelly, who faced second-degree murder charges. Following a lengthy trial, a mistrial was declared after the jury could not reach a verdict.

Upon her return to PCAO, Hunley will oversee both administration and operations, stepping in as acting county attorney when County Attorney Conover is unavailable. In her statement, Hunley expressed her honor in joining PCAO and her commitment to justice, stating, “I am committed to fostering a workplace where every team member can excel.”

Hunley emphasized her dedication to Pima County’s vision, which focuses on implementing restorative justice practices that ensure community safety while promoting healing and accountability. Pima County Attorney Laura Conover highlighted Hunley’s unique qualifications, marking her appointment as a crucial moment for PCAO’s growth and innovation.
