Phoenix’s Greenwood Brewing teams up with Mercury to celebrate women

PHOENIX — Despite a 2021 Brewers Association survey indicating that fewer than three percent of U.S. breweries are fully owned by women, Greenwood Brewing in Phoenix stands out as an exception. Megan Greenwood, its founder, is partnering with the Phoenix Mercury to uplift women by promoting their shared “Her Story” initiative, packaged in a beer can.

Greenwood’s flagship pale ale, Herstory, is being relaunched with a special limited edition design that pays homage to the Mercury’s status as three-time WNBA champions. These 24-ounce cans are available at Greenwood Brewing on Roosevelt Row and during Mercury games at the Footprint Center.

“Herstory is a celebration of women, aligning perfectly with our collaboration with the Mercury,” Greenwood explained. She expressed her excitement about collaborating with a women-centric team in a predominately male-dominated industry. “If someone told me that I’d be launching a beer with a women’s NBA team, I’d have considered it amazing. Being a woman-owned and self-funded brewery is indeed a rarity.”

This partnership highlights the growing presence of women in craft brewing. Greenwood noted, “This year felt significant for launching a beer with Phoenix’s women athletes and female brewers. Women are opting for craft beer, and we’re seeing more breweries led by women.”

In addition to Greenwood Brewing, Phoenix is also a hub for major professional sports franchises, including the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, NBA’s Phoenix Suns, WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, and MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks. Each team adds to the city’s lively sports culture.

The Cardinals play at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, while the Footprint Center hosts both the Suns and the Mercury. The Arizona Rattlers, part of the Indoor Football League, compete at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale. Additionally, USL’s Phoenix Rising FC calls Phoenix Rising FC Stadium home.

Phoenix is not only a hub for professional sports but also hosts various high-profile sporting events annually. These include the Fiesta Bowl, WM Phoenix Open, and NASCAR races each spring and fall, contributing to the region’s vibrant athletic scene.
