Phoenix zoo announces death of fennec fox

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Zoo is mourning the loss of Noelle, a beloved fennec fox who passed away at the age of 12. The zoo announced her death in an Instagram post on January 7, reflecting on her long-standing presence in their care.

Noelle arrived at the Phoenix Zoo in 2012 at just six months old. Known for her sweet demeanor, she formed close bonds with her fellow residents, including Hunter, a 9-year-old fennec fox, and Loki, the zoo’s male leopard tortoise.

Fennec foxes, the smallest fox species in the world, thrive in desert environments. According to National Geographic, their distinctive large ears can measure up to six inches. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute notes that while these creatures are not endangered, they typically live up to 11 years under human care.

“Her big ears and sleepy yawns will be missed dearly by guests and staff alike,” shared the zoo in their heartfelt tribute.
