Phoenix Zoo Mourns Loss of Howard the Rhino Following Battle with Neurological Condition
PHOENIX — The Phoenix Zoo announced the passing of Howard, a southern white rhinoceros, this past Sunday. Howard, who joined the zoo in 2020 from Florida’s Brevard Zoo, had been battling a severe neurological condition that had recently worsened.
Born in 1997 at the White Oak Conservation Center in Florida, Howard’s condition became unmanageable despite ongoing treatment. The zoo’s veterinary team, alongside zookeepers, made the difficult decision to euthanize him.
In addition to his neurological issues, Howard was diagnosed with meningitis and sepsis. The zoo is currently conducting further pathology tests, which are expected to provide more insight into his illnesses in the coming weeks.
“Howard was an easy-going rhino who enjoyed interacting with his keepers,” stated the Phoenix Zoo’s Hoofstock team. “He will be greatly missed by everyone on the Hoofstock team.” His cheerful demeanor and fondness for interaction made him a favorite among visitors and staff alike.
Currently, the Phoenix Zoo is home to one remaining southern white rhinoceros, a female named LouLou. Howard’s absence marks a significant loss for the zoo community, who described him as “extraordinarily missed.”
