Phoenix police involved in shooting and pursuit, 2 people injured

PHOENIX — In a significant incident on Wednesday night, two individuals were hospitalized following a confrontation with Phoenix police that escalated into a high-speed pursuit. The events unfolded shortly before 6:30 p.m. near 27th and Northern avenues.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers from the Cactus Park precinct were engaged in what officials termed “proactive policing.” This approach involves initiating law enforcement interactions independent of specific calls for service, as explained by Public Information Officer Rob Scherer during a news conference.

Officers attempted to stop a white vehicle, requesting the driver and passenger to exit. However, the suspects did not comply, leading to a rapid evasion attempt. The situation intensified when the suspects turned the car back toward the officers at high speed, prompting at least one officer to discharge their firearm.

The police subsequently pursued the vehicle, which ultimately crashed at the intersection of 59th Lane and Northern Avenue. One suspect was apprehended on the scene, while the second fled into a nearby neighborhood. A perimeter was quickly established by law enforcement, resulting in the detention of both individuals.

Both suspects sustained gunshot wounds during the altercation and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
