Phoenix Officer Receives Heroic Tribute After Surviving Shooting That Took His Partner’s Life
PHOENIX — During a recent Grand Canyon University men’s basketball game, Officer Matthew Haney was honored for his bravery after surviving a shooting incident in September. The officer received a warm standing ovation while on center court alongside his wife and child, proudly holding an honorary game ball.
“They gave us a chance to honor a hero,” remarked Phoenix Police Interim Chief Michael Sullivan. He praised Haney’s courage, noting the officer’s sacrifice made in the line of duty when he was shot while investigating a car break-in.
The incident unfolded on September 3, when Haney and fellow officer Zane Coolidge pursued a suspect named Saul Bal. During the chase, Bal reportedly opened fire, hitting both officers. Tragically, Officer Coolidge succumbed to his injuries days later, leaving behind a devastated family.
Haney has since made strides in his recovery and has returned to duty on a “light duty” basis. Sullivan emphasized the community’s support for law enforcement, stating, “It’s great for them to be able to feel that love,” a sentiment echoed by many at the event.
Thursday’s game was themed “Hometown Heroes,” aptly reflecting the valor displayed by Haney and his colleagues, who risk their lives daily. Sullivan acknowledged the lasting impact of such traumatic experiences, remarking, “Those are scars that don’t heal easily… But we go on because we have a very important mission to complete.”
