Watery woes: Busy Phoenix intersection stuck with several days of lane closures after leak

An 18-inch water leak is causing a multi-day repair effort off 24th Street and Camelback Road

PHOENIX — A significant water leak at the busy intersection near Biltmore Fashion Park is expected to trigger several days of traffic congestion.

The waterpipe break, located 14 feet beneath 24th Street and Camelback Road, was identified on Saturday, prompting repair crews to begin work at 6 a.m. Monday.

“Expect traffic restrictions to remain in place until at least Thursday,” stated Mike Gertzman, spokesperson for Phoenix Water Services Department. “Rush hour traffic will be heavily affected. It’s advisable to avoid the area if possible.”

While all roads are technically open, several lanes are closed: the northbound right lane on 24th Street, one of two southbound left lanes on 24th Street, and both right lanes on Camelback Road heading east.

“Drivers should remain cautious, drive slowly, and ideally avoid the intersection,” advised Gertzman.

Pinpointing the exact cause of the leak, buried 14 feet underground, remains a challenge. Fortunately, it is not a severe leak.

“As Phoenix’s infrastructure ages, pipe breaks become more common due to ground shifts and pipe wear,” Gertzman explained. “It’s fortunate we caught this early, avoiding more severe damage.”

Though some traffic delays are inevitable, Phoenix Water Services assures that businesses in the vicinity will remain unaffected.
