A busy weekend ahead for Phoenix-area freeway work

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced several road closures affecting major highways in the Phoenix area from August 9-12. Drivers are urged to budget extra travel time or explore alternate routes as the following closures take place:

Northbound I-17 will be closed at Jomax Road in north Phoenix from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for pavement improvements. Traffic will be funneled into one lane between Jomax Road and Loop 303, with the northbound I-17 on-ramp at Happy Valley Road also closed. Westbound Jomax Road near I-17 will be shut down. Motorists are advised to stay on the primary freeway detour and avoid using nearby streets, especially during peak hours.

From 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday, westbound I-10 will be closed between US 60 (Superstition Freeway) and State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) for construction. On-ramps at Elliot, Baseline, and Broadway roads will also be closed. Drivers should consider using alternate routes such as eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) or eastbound US 60 to reach northbound Loop 101 and westbound Loop 202. Additionally, eastbound I-10 will be narrowed to three lanes between 40th and 48th streets, with the on-ramp at 40th Street closed. Southbound 48th Street will also be closed between I-10 and Broadway Road.

Westbound US 60 will be closed between Loop 101 and I-10 from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for pavement maintenance, including the on-ramps at Alma School and Dobson roads. Drivers are advised to consider northbound Loop 101 to westbound Loop 202 as an alternate route to reach Sky Harbor Airport or downtown Phoenix.

Eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) will be closed between Loop 101 and Arizona Avenue in Chandler from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a freeway widening project. Alternate routes include eastbound Chandler Boulevard or Germann Road.

The northbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) will be closed at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for bridge work. On-ramps at Shea Boulevard, Cactus Road, and Raintree Drive will also be closed. Traffic will be detoured onto the northbound frontage road to the on-ramp at Princess Drive/Pima Road.

Northbound State Route 51 will be narrowed to one lane between Glendale Avenue and Shea Boulevard from 9 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday for pavement maintenance, including the closure of northbound SR 51 on-ramps at Glendale and Northern avenues. Alternate routes such as northbound Seventh Street to northbound Cave Creek Road and eastbound Cactus Road should be considered.

Ramp closures include the eastbound I-10 off-ramp at 48th Street/SR 143, starting 8 p.m. Friday and lasting until late fall. Northbound 48th Street between Broadway Road and I-10 will also be closed from 8 p.m. Friday until September. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes like the eastbound I-10 exit at Broadway Road.

All schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions. For more detailed updates, visit the ADOT website or consult the Weekend Travel Advisory map.
