Phoenix Bids Farewell: Iconic Metrocenter Mall Faces Demolition
PHOENIX — Demolition of the historic Metrocenter Mall begins Monday at noon, marking the end of a significant chapter for the community. The site will transform into a walkable village that features homes alongside numerous shopping and dining options.
Opened in 1973, Metrocenter was Arizona’s first indoor, air-conditioned mall, becoming a landmark in the area. It was notable not just for its shopping experience but also for being an early cinema location and even a filming location for the cult classic, “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.”
After closing its doors in 2020, the city council approved an ambitious redevelopment plan in 2022, allocating $850 million for a project that will include 2,600 multifamily residences and 150,000 square feet of commercial space alongside the new light rail station. Originally scheduled for demolition in summer 2023, the project faced delays due to additional environmental assessments.
City officials stated that the redevelopment will be completed in phases, with the first phase expected to open by 2026. This project aims to provide a model for revitalizing vacant retail spaces across the nation.
A ceremony will be held to honor the mall’s contributions to the community before the demolition starts.
