Paris Teaser, Tuesday, July 30: Women’s Gymnastics Team Final & Crucial Swimming Clashes
Team USA is favored to win the team gymnastics gold, with reigning champion Russia blocked from competing.
WASHINGTON — Day 4 of the 2024 Olympic Games brings pivotal moments as Simone Biles takes her first steps toward gold in Paris. Meanwhile, Team USA gears up for multiple medal opportunities in significant swimming events.
Here’s what to watch out for during Tuesday’s competition at the Paris Olympics.
Women’s Gymnastics Team Final
The U.S. women’s gymnastics team, led by Biles, looks for redemption in the team final. Biles earlier exited the last Summer Games midway due to the “twisties,” impeding her spatial awareness.
With Biles absent, the U.S. team settled for silver, outdone by Russia. This year, with Russia excluded, the U.S. is in prime position for gold.
Despite a calf tweak during Sunday’s warm-up, Biles excelled in Olympic qualifiers. She joins Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee, and 16-year-old Hezly Rivera in Tuesday’s finals, competing in all four events.
Swimming
In the pool, the U.S. eyes several gold medals. Especially noteworthy is Bobby Finke in the men’s 800-meter freestyle final.
Another potential highlight is the women’s 100-meter backstroke, offering another medal chance for Team USA.
Surfing
In Tahiti, U.S. surfer Griffin Colapinto aims for gold amidst weather-dependent conditions in Olympic surfing’s final matches.
BMX
Top BMX bikers take center stage at La Concorde for BMX freestyle qualifying, displaying their skills with flips and tricks.
Soccer
Following a tough 0-3 loss to France and a rebound with a 4-1 win over New Zealand, the U.S. men’s soccer team faces Guinea in their last group stage match.
A victory over Guinea likely secures a quarterfinal spot, though some scenarios could see the U.S. eliminated even with a win.
