Paris Showdown: Sha’Carri Richardson, Simone Biles, and Katie Ledecky Chase Gold on Saturday, Aug. 3
PARIS, France — The spotlight will be on Simone Biles on Saturday as she aims for her third gold medal in the vault event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Saturday marks the beginning of the second weekend of competition, featuring American athletes in gymnastics, track and field, and swimming. Biles, having already secured gold in the individual and team all-around events, now seeks another in the vault final, scheduled for 10:20 a.m. Eastern time. She faces stiff competition from Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, the defending Olympic champion.
Sha’Carri Richardson will also take center stage in the women’s 100 meters, where she aims for her first Olympic medal. Meanwhile, Katie Ledecky will compete in the women’s 800-meter freestyle, targeting another gold to add to her impressive collection.
In gymnastics, U.S. men’s team member Stephen Nedoroscik will compete in the pommel horse final at 11:16 a.m. Eastern, hoping to continue the momentum that earned the U.S. its first men’s team medal in 16 years.
The title of the world’s fastest woman will be decided on the track. Richardson, the reigning world champion, will potentially compete against three-time Olympic gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica. However, Tokyo gold medalist Elaine Thompson-Herah will miss the competition due to injury, and Jamaican teammate Shericka Jackson has opted out of the event.
In the men’s shot put final, Ryan Crouser eyes a historic third consecutive title. His impressive performance at the U.S. Olympic trials, where he threw 22.84 meters (74 feet, 11¼ inches), sets him up as the favorite.
Victory in the women’s 800-meter freestyle would place Katie Ledecky alongside Michael Phelps as the only swimmers to win the same event at four different Olympics. Ledecky holds the world record for the 800 meters with a time of 8:04.79 and has dominated this event since 2012.
