Chad Whittle, chairman of the Proposition 488 PAC, addressed the impact of the successful bond election at a victory party held at 347 Grill tonight. Members of the Political Action Committee celebrated a significant milestone for the Maricopa Unified School District, as the bond issue passed with a narrow margin.

The $70 million bond for the construction and expansion of schools was approved by a vote of 14,938 to 14,500, reflecting a margin of just 438 votes. Whittle noted, “Even if it was close, that’s 400 more who support us,” emphasizing the importance of community backing.

Whittle acknowledged that understanding the concerns of those who voted against the proposition is essential. “We have to figure out though how to continue to build relationships with the others that didn’t vote for us,” he stated. His remarks underline the belief that strong communities rely on robust educational systems.

During the celebration, it was highlighted that precinct approval varied significantly. Rancho El Dorado led with nearly 55% approval, while Hidden Valley reported only 32.28%. Whittle identified Tortosa, Desert Cedars, and Santa Rosa as areas needing focused outreach.

The bond’s approval paves the way for constructing two new schools for grades K-8, including a middle and an elementary school. Plans also include enhancing facilities at Maricopa High School to support Career and Technical Education, as well as increased classroom space across existing schools.

The Sorrento community will see the first new middle school, projected to cost approximately $44 million. Additionally, the election resulted in a reshaping of the MUSD Governing Board. Shawnté Rothschild narrowly defeated Nicolas Yendrzeski for a board seat, while Carolyn Lopez won re-election with significant support, capturing 31% of the votes. Former board member Ben Owens also secured a seat with 27%.

As Pinal County Board of Supervisors officially canvassed the results of the Nov. 5 election, the Proposition 488 bond issue results remained unchanged from the previously released unofficial numbers.
