Outdoor Advocates Unite at Arizona Capitol to Protect Public Lands from Federal Budget Cuts

On Thursday afternoon, a diverse group of hunters, anglers, birders, and outdoor enthusiasts gathered at the Arizona Capitol to protest proposed changes to the management of public lands. This rally comes in response to initiatives led by President Donald Trump and Arizona GOP lawmakers that aim to alter public land policies.
Land Tawney, co-chair of the American Hunters and Anglers Action Network, voiced strong support for public lands, stating, “We are all on the same footing. There is nothing more democratic than our public lands.” His remarks resonated with attendees as he emphasized the importance of these natural spaces.
Tawney, a seasoned advocate for conservation, joined local organizations to highlight concerns over recent significant budget cuts affecting federal oversight agencies. These cuts have led to layoffs, including at least 1,000 park service employees in February. The Department of Government Efficiency, an initiative by Elon Musk aimed at streamlining federal agencies, has caused widespread operational setbacks, including reduced visitation hours at Arizona’s visitor centers and halted habitat restoration efforts.
