On would-be anniversary, girlfriend mourns teen killed in Phoenix ATV accident

PHOENIX — A tragic incident occurred Thursday evening involving two teenagers and an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in Phoenix. Nolan Coffland, 16, was riding with a friend when the ATV crashed through a metal fence and plunged 30 feet into a dry canal.

Emergency responders discovered the vehicle overturned. While Coffland did not survive, his friend was transported to the hospital in extremely critical condition. The accident shocked the friends and family of both boys, who gathered at the crash site the next day, seeking answers.

Coffland’s girlfriend, Emory Chambers, received the devastating news during a phone call. “I was at softball practice and thought he was ignoring me,” she recounted. “His cousin called to say, ‘There’s been an accident.'” The day, intended to celebrate their four-month anniversary, turned into one of mourning for Chambers.

“His car was his favorite thing,” she reflected, remembering Coffland as a goofy and funny individual. Family members described him as a dedicated student and football player at Centennial High School, expressing their disbelief over his death. “We are without words on his tragic death and continue to pray for his best friend who is fighting for his life,” the family stated.

Authorities are currently examining nearby surveillance footage for clues regarding the circumstances of the crash. The investigation continues as the community grapples with this heartbreaking loss.
