Olympus celebrates historic designation

The Olympus condominiums celebrated a milestone on Saturday, October 19, marking 60 years of community togetherness. The event coincided with the exciting news that The Olympus has been officially designated a historic site on the National Register of Historic Places. Residents were joined by local preservationists, friends, family, vendors, and journalists, all eager to partake in the festivities.

Located at the northwest corner of Central and Maryland avenues, The Olympus opened its doors in October 1964. Designed by Chopas & Starkovich Architects, this 36-condominium community embodies the architectural style of “the new formalism.” The building’s historical significance is underscored by its pioneering use of post-tensioned, poured-in-place concrete, an innovative construction method for the Phoenix region during that era.

The weather was perfect, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere. Guests, some dressed in vintage clothing, relished a selection of refreshments while listening to a curated playlist of songs from 1964, surrounded by Greek-themed decorations and an air of festivity.

Arianna Urban from the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office provided key remarks, acknowledging the site’s significance. Janet Traylor, president of The Olympus Association, raised a toast with mead, celebrating both the property’s rich history and its contemporary residents, fondly referred to as “current-day Olympians.”
