Olympic skateboarder Nyjah Huston criticizes quality of Paris medals

The Olympic bronze medal earned by Team USA skateboarder Nyjah Huston is already showing notable wear after just a brief period.

PARIS, France — Huston’s first Olympic medal, won less than two weeks ago, is visibly battered. The two-time Olympian shared his concerns on Instagram, stating the medal appears as though it “went to war and back.”

“Alright, so these Olympic medals look great when they are brand new,” Huston remarked in a video. “But after letting it sit on my skin with some sweat for a little bit and then letting my friends wear it over the weekend, they are apparently not as high quality as you would think.”

He showed the medal’s damage to his followers, noting, “It’s looking rough. Even the front is starting to chip off a little.”

Huston humorously suggested, “Olympic medals, you gotta maybe step up the quality a little bit.”

He subsequently posted that medals “are meant to be in cases.”

A Paris 2024 spokesperson confirmed awareness of the situation and reported active collaboration with Monnaie de Paris, responsible for medal production and quality control, alongside the concerned athlete’s National Olympic Committee.

“Paris 2024 is working closely with Monnaie de Paris and the National Olympic Committee of the athlete affected to appraise the medal and understand the circumstances of the damage,” stated the organizers.

“The medals are the most coveted objects of the Games and the most precious for the athletes. Monnaie de Paris will systematically replace damaged medals and engrave them in an identical manner to the originals.”
