Olympic fencer is 7 months pregnant, reveals upcoming baby after competing in Paris

PARIS, France — In a display of both athletic prowess and personal resilience, Egyptian fencer Nada Hafez competed at the Paris Olympics while seven months pregnant.

The 26-year-old Cairo native announced her remarkable condition on Instagram hours after advancing to the round of 16 in the women’s saber competition on Monday. Hafez noted she was “carrying a little Olympian one,” highlighting her extraordinary journey.

In a match filled with intensity and determination, Hafez defeated former NCAA champion Elizabeth Tartakovsky of the United States. However, her Olympic run ended when she was defeated by Jeon Hayoung of South Korea.

“My baby & I had our fair share of challenges, be it both physical & emotional,” Hafez shared. “The rollercoaster of pregnancy is tough on its own, but having to fight to keep the balance of life & sports was nothing short of strenuous, however worth it. I’m writing this post to say that pride fills my being for securing my place in the round of 16!”

Beyond her fencing accolades, Hafez has a background as a gymnast and holds a degree in medicine. She is also a decorated athlete, having won gold medals in individual and team saber events at the 2019 African Games. Achieving her best Olympic result to date, she concluded Monday’s competition officially ranked 16th.
