Occupants survive Mother’s Day car fire, follows Saturday crash nearby

On the evening of May 11, 2025, a Hyundai Tucson erupted in flames at the intersection of Smith-Enke Road and Vintage Drive shortly after sunset.

The incident unfolded around 7 p.m. when the vehicle broke down and began emitting smoke. By 7:15 p.m., flames engulfed the SUV’s engine compartment.

The Maricopa Fire and Medical Department arrived at the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m. Fortunately, all passengers had exited the vehicle before the fire intensified.

“All passengers were out of the vehicle and were moved to a safe location,” stated MFMD spokesperson Monica Williams.

This intersection is notorious for various accidents, including pedestrian and cyclist incidents, rollovers, and motorcycle crashes.

Williams reported that the Maricopa Police Department was already controlling traffic when fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Earlier that day, around 1 p.m., Smith-Enke Road was closed east of Porter Road due to a separate rear-end collision, resulting in minor injuries.

Rancho Mirage resident Taylor Balli recounted how another car “pulled out completely in front of us.” She attempted to stop but didn’t have enough time, resulting in damage to her vehicle.

“I heard it happen right in my backyard,” remarked local resident Aaron Keel, who captured the incident on dashcam.
