The Pima Community College softball team, boasting an impressive 18-0 record, faced off against Eastern Arizona College in a doubleheader on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field. This matchup marked a departure from their ACCAC conference schedule.

The Aztecs dominated the Gila Monsters, scoring a staggering 20 runs throughout the two games. Freshman Jiselle Nunez from Tucson Magnet High School shone brightly, going 6 for 7 at the plate, driving in seven RBIs, and crossing home three times. Talia Martin, a sophomore from Mountain View High School, set an aggressive tone as lead-off, tallying five runs, an RBI, and four walks over the doubleheader. Fellow sophomore Aubrey Marx also made significant contributions, recording four hits and three RBIs. Alyssa Noriega, another sophomore from Pueblo High School, chipped in with two hits, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Pitchers Arianna Flores and Jessica Thompson secured victories on the mound.

In the first game, the Aztecs defeated the Gila Monsters 10-3. An energized roster kicked off scoring in the first inning, where Martin, Marx, and Nunez each crossed home plate to establish a 3-0 lead. Marx continued the momentum with an RBI single in the second inning, followed by Nunez’s two-run double, widening the gap to 6-1. Noriega added insult to injury with a home run, bringing the score to 8-1.

Nunez finished that game with a perfect 3 for 3 performance, contributing two RBIs and scoring twice. Noriega’s efforts included an impressive 1 for 3 showing, and Martin added to the collective success with two runs and two walks. Flores notched her eighth win by pitching a complete game, yielding three runs on seven hits while striking out six.

The second game saw the Aztecs claim a decisive 10-2 victory in just five innings. Nunez’s walk-off RBI double capped off a three-run fifth inning after the team’s earlier efforts. The Gila Monsters initially struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning, but the Aztecs quickly equalized. A sacrifice fly by Noriega allowed Martin to score, initiating a six-run surge during the fourth inning that ultimately solidified their lead.

Nunez again showcased her skills, hitting a grand slam that propelled the score to 7-2. Overall, she achieved a standout performance, going 3 for 4 with five RBIs. Martin’s contributions included three runs and an RBI, while Thompson’s pitching effort led to her fourth win; she allowed just two runs over five innings.

Looking ahead, the Aztecs will resume ACCAC conference play on Tuesday, hosting the No. 10 ranked Phoenix College at noon. The team’s momentum is palpable, and fans eagerly anticipate their next matchup.
