Abdihamid Nur, a North High School graduate from the class of 2017, secured his spot on the 2024 Paris Olympic team in the 5,000-meter Track and Field event at the end of June. He achieved this by finishing second at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials held on June 30 at Hayward Field in Oregon, clocking a time of 13:09.01.
A 2022 graduate of Northern Arizona University (NAU), Nur is now the second alum from the institution to qualify for the Olympics. His record includes collegiate achievements such as holding the outdoor record in the 10,000-meter (13:06.32) and winning NCAA indoor titles in the 3,000-meters and 5,000-meters in 2022.
Nike sponsors Nur as he continues to compete professionally. He has earned two national titles and represented the U.S. at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships. Ahead of the Olympics, Nur will compete in the first round of the 5,000-meters on August 7, aiming for the finals scheduled for August 10. In the preliminary round, he recorded a time of 13:24.14, finishing second overall and advancing to the finals, joining Olympian Grant Fisher on the team.
“Phoenix Union is proud to cheer on one of our own!” the district stated, expressing pride in Nur’s accomplishments.
