Noah Lyles says he won't run 4x100m relay after needing medical attention following the 200m

Lyles was diagnosed with COVID-19 and collapsed after the 200 meters. Medics quickly attended to him on the track.

PARIS, France — Noah Lyles announced he would withdraw from the men’s 4×100-meter relay after being carted from the track post-race. He finished third in the 200-meter sprint before receiving the diagnosis.

“I believe this will be the end of my 2024 Olympics,” Lyles posted on Instagram. “It is not the Olympics I dreamed of but it has left me with so much joy in my heart,” he added.

Lyles was supposed to compete in the relay final on Friday.

“I hope everyone enjoyed the show. Whether you were rooting for me or against me, you have to admit you watched, didn’t you?” Lyles noted, closing with a winking emoji and “See you next time.”

After the 200-meter race, he collapsed and had to be helped by medical staff. Lyles later confirmed in an interview that he tested positive for COVID-19 two days before.

“I woke up early Tuesday morning feeling really horrible. Testing confirmed it was COVID,” Lyles said. “I didn’t panic, but it was a challenge. Hydration and isolation were key.”

Despite the setback, Lyles earned a bronze medal. He expressed pride for overcoming adversity, especially after his disappointing performance in the previous Olympics.

The U.S. track federation confirmed adherence to Olympic and CDC guidelines.

It’s the second consecutive Olympics where COVID-19 impacted Lyles. The virus’ effect on the Tokyo Games had previously led to his depression.

During the men’s 200-meter final, Lyles was seen wearing a medical mask on TV, which he also wore during the semifinals.

Lyles is not alone; British swimmer Adam Peaty also tested positive for COVID-19 at the Paris Games shortly after winning a silver medal.
