Maricopa Unified School District’s superintendent addressed concerns this morning about an alleged “potential school shooting,” clarifying that the threat was “not considered a credible threat.”

Dr. Tracey Lopeman confirmed that district schools remained open while authorities investigated the situation.

“This morning, we sent an email to parents informing them about an ongoing safety investigation,” stated MUSD spokesperson Mishell Terry. “The Maricopa Police Department, in coordination with federal law enforcement, identified preliminary internet chatter regarding a potential school threat. School will continue as scheduled while we closely monitor the situation with law enforcement. We are committed to keeping our parents informed and will provide updates as necessary.”

In a letter to parents, Lopeman explained the involvement of federal law enforcement in identifying the internet chatter about a potential school shooting. “At this time, the information is preliminary, not specific to MUSD, and not considered a credible threat,” she noted.

Details about the threat were not disclosed.

“We are closely monitoring the situation with law enforcement to ensure the safety of our students,” Lopeman reassured.
