Next Stop L.A.: Maricopa Off-Roaders Rally for Wildfire Relief

Firefighters in California face mounting challenges as they combat four wind-driven wildfires across the Los Angeles metro area. As of early January 7, 2025, these fires have engulfed over 62 square miles and claimed at least 25 lives since their onset on Wednesday.
The intense weather conditions contribute significantly to the fire’s escalation. “Normally, we don’t see a lot of large fire growth this time of year due to the weather and the moisture we receive,” remarked Arizona Forestry Battalion Chief Richard Jones. However, the current lack of moisture has resulted in persistently active and volatile fire conditions. He emphasized the importance of community awareness regarding the ongoing drought.
Meanwhile, in Arizona, Senita resident Krystle Benally has found herself grappling with the overwhelming imagery from the Southern California wildfires flooding her social media feeds. “You get on your phone, and you scroll and that’s all you see — pictures of people trying to escape their homes. You see animals fleeing,” she said, describing the emotional toll it has taken on her.
Initially feeling powerless, Benally resolved to make a difference. She reached out to her off-roading community, the Maricopa Overlanders, to mobilize a donation drive. “I got the thought to just start messaging and texting everyone to get it started,” she recalled.
The group has since organized a donation event scheduled for Saturday morning outside Tractor Supply Co. at 17590 Shea Way, where community members can contribute new and unused hygiene products, face masks, food, water, and pet supplies. Donations will be accepted between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m.
Following the drive, members plan to transport the collected items to various locations in Los Angeles on January 25. For Benally, the initiative has fostered a sense of unity essential for lifting the spirits of those affected by the fires. “Showing everyone affected by the fires that they’re not forgotten… to know we made a difference, is well worth it,” she said.
For those unable to attend the event, several drop-off locations have been established for donations until January 23:
- Underdog Motorsports — 255 E. Southern Ave., Ste. 7, Mesa
- Ed Whitehead’s Tire Pro — 313 N. Maricopa St., Casa Grande
- Modern Off-Road and Automotive — 3602 W. Clarendon Ave., Phoenix
- Traci Daniel’s residence — 1078 N. Crimm Rd., San Tan Valley
