New wildfire burning near Fort McDowell, northbound State Route 87 closed

FORT MCDOWELL, Ariz. — A wildfire, known as the Cub Fire, is currently affecting an area seven miles east of Fort McDowell. The fire ignited around 6 p.m. on June 15 and has since consumed approximately 186 acres.

According to the Tonto National Forest, the incident is located on the east side of State Route 87, specifically within the Mesa Fire District. Authorities are urging the public to avoid Forest Service roads 11, 1860, and 1861 as fire crews work to contain the blaze.

In response to the situation, the Arizona Department of Transportation has closed the northbound lanes of SR 87 between mileposts 204 and 208. This closure is related to another incident involving a vehicle crash at milepost 206. The southbound lanes remain open.

Firefighting efforts include six engines, one water tender, and approximately 50 personnel assigned to manage the situation. The Tonto National Forest has advised drivers to remain cautious and be aware of lane restrictions from Mile Marker 205 to 207 on SR 87.

The cause of the Cub Fire is currently under investigation as responders continue their work to prevent further spread.
