Student, faculty & guest choreography hits the stage for new UA dance season

The University of Arizona’s School of Dance is set to unveil an exciting array of performances for the 2024/25 dance season, highlighting both guest and in-house choreography. Director and professor Duane Cyrus, who joined the university in 2022, explained that the season’s theme centers around “Passion, Commitment and Opportunity.”

Under Cyrus’s guidance, the school has prioritized updating its curriculum to better prepare students for professional careers in dance. “Our goal is to meet the needs of our students,” he said, reflecting a commitment to their development.

Students at the School of Dance enjoy a multifaceted experience, engaging in local and out-of-state performances as part of a traveling ensemble. They assist faculty with various aspects of production, including costuming and stage work. This hands-on experience culminates in a series of shows throughout the season.

The first event, “Fall For Dance,” runs until Sunday, November 17, at the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre. This showcase includes choreography by Emmy Award winner Tyce Diorio, who mentored students for seven weeks. General admission tickets are priced at $38, with discounts available for seniors, military personnel, and UA employees.

Next up is “Pulse: Student Showcase,” scheduled for December 5-8, where students will present their original choreography. Tickets for this event are $28 for general admission and $15 for students.

From February 20-23, 2025, the “Student Success: Scholarship Series” will feature pieces from students, community groups, and faculty aimed at promoting arts support. Ticket prices remain consistent with previous events, offering affordability for various attendees.

Dance Springs Eternal” takes the stage from April 10-20, 2025, showcasing a variety of dance styles. General admission tickets will be available for $38.

The season will conclude with “Emerge: Student Spotlight,” from May 1-4, highlighting student works with tickets priced at $28 for general admission. Lastly, the MFA Thesis Concert on May 9-10 will present original pieces by Master of Fine Arts candidates with tickets available for $22 general admission.

This dynamic lineup promises to celebrate talent and creativity while engaging the community in the vibrant world of dance.
