New Orleans attack prompts tighter security in D.C. ahead of inauguration, Carter funeral

Law enforcement in Washington, D.C. is ramping up security in the wake of a recent terrorist attack in New Orleans and an explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. As several high-profile events approach, including the swearing-in of the new Congress and the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, authorities are on heightened alert.

The U.S. Secret Service, under the direction of Matthew Young, assistant special agent in charge, confirmed that security plans would be adjusted as necessary. “Our mission is to provide a safe and secure environment for our protectees and all individuals involved in these events,” Young stated.

Security for major events like the Electoral College certification and President Carter’s upcoming funeral at Washington National Cathedral has been designated as National Special Security Events, placing the Secret Service in charge of planning and logistics. This designation, newly applied to the Electoral College certification, comes in response to the violent events at the U.S. Capitol last year.

The Metropolitan Police Department issued a statement emphasizing that while there is no known threat to the capital, an increased security presence will be maintained. “Whenever an incident occurs in the country, MPD closely monitors the situation and evaluates intelligence,” the department noted. The heightened security is part of an ongoing effort to safeguard residents, businesses, and visitors.

Meanwhile, U.S. Capitol Police have already ramped up their security measures. On Thursday, they closed several streets near the Capitol after a person drove on a sidewalk, prompting an investigation. The individual was taken into custody and subsequently charged with reckless driving after authorities confirmed there were no explosives in the vehicle.

The violent scene in New Orleans left at least 15 people dead and 37 injured when a truck was driven onto Bourbon Street. Concurrently, investigators are looking into the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck in Las Vegas, but as of now, no connections have been established between these incidents.
