New chamber head may be the Key to the whole plan

The Sedona Chamber of Commerce has welcomed a new president and CEO, David John Key, who previously served as the director of business development at the Tempe Chamber of Commerce. His appointment marks a shift towards increased advocacy and collaboration among local stakeholders.

Key expressed his desire to refocus the chamber’s efforts on connecting with community needs and fostering partnerships. “Advocacy is really the future of this chamber,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of serving as a liaison between local businesses and elected officials. His experience in marketing, events, and membership development positions him to lead these initiatives effectively.

Highlighting the significance of economic data, Key noted, “I’m always a numbers guy. I think economics is the backbone of any good policy.” He aims to gather meaningful business information to inform decisions and engage with city representatives, ultimately seeking economic prosperity for the community.

Key’s approach to local issues, including short-term rentals, is rooted in economic principles. He acknowledged the complexity of the topic and encouraged short-term rental owners to collaborate with the chamber to address concerns. “We want to preserve the community,” he said, while recognizing that healthy competition can benefit consumers.

Looking ahead, Key is optimistic about Sedona’s economic opportunities. He believes challenges often present avenues for growth and aims to make the chamber a problem-solver for local businesses. “It has to be an all-ships-rising-on-high-tides,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of collective success.

Addressing criticisms directed at the chamber regarding tourism, Key invited residents to engage in constructive dialogue. “It’s easy to critique, but I’d invite anyone who’s critiquing to maybe provide an idea or solution,” he suggested, demonstrating his commitment to collaborative problem-solving.

Key expressed support for the chamber’s Uptown Visitor Center, recognizing it as an essential resource for tourists and the local community. His background in the music industry, where he played in a rock band and managed a metal group, adds a unique dimension to his leadership style. He sees artists as integral to the local economy and encourages their involvement with the chamber’s initiatives.

In addition, Key is focused on youth outreach, seeking to connect with young people in the community. “I want to encourage and mentor the youth coming out of the community,” he said, acknowledging Sedona’s aging demographics. He highlighted the importance of increasing youth engagement in civic matters, including voting.

As he settles into his new role, Key envisions a vibrant future for Sedona, driven by collaboration between the chamber and the community it serves. “We want the business community to have more of a voice,” he concluded, underlining the value of collective efforts in shaping the local economic landscape.
