The National Education Association (NEA), the largest labor union in the United States, is continuing its advocacy for gender transitions among children. Recently, the NEA promoted a guide by Advocates for Youth coinciding with the Transgender Day of Remembrance. This guide, released last year, emphasizes the distinction between sex assigned at birth and individual gender identity.

According to the guide, children may recognize their gender identity as early as 18 months to three years old. It asserts that parents should not be the sole authorities in decisions regarding their children’s gender identity. The guide criticizes parents who oppose transgender ideologies, labeling their reliance on conflicting information as “misinformation and falsehoods.” It encourages parents to seek out supportive resources for transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive youth (TNGE).

In addition to addressing parental roles, the guide outlines expectations for educators. It calls for proactive education on gender identity and the celebration of LGBTQ history and culture within schools. Recommendations include using students’ chosen names and preferred pronouns, granting access to gender-specific facilities that align with their gender identity, and allowing participation in preferred extracurricular activities.

The guide describes opponents of transgender ideology, particularly concerning children, as “extremists” who disseminate disinformation. It also contains several contentious assertions, such as the safety and necessity of puberty blockers, as well as the classification of transgenderism as a non-mental illness.

The Arizona Education Association (AEA), an affiliate of the NEA, represents over 22,000 school employees. Like the NEA, the AEA is active in promoting LGBTQ+ rights and gender transition initiatives among minors. Notably, the AEA was instrumental in repealing a 28-year-old law that prohibited discussing homosexuality in HIV/AIDS education. This law restricted any discussion that could be interpreted as promoting a homosexual lifestyle.

Moreover, the AEA has campaigned against legislation aimed at regulating bathroom access based on biological sex. They celebrated the defeat of a proposed bill perceived as discriminatory towards trans youth and educators, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to fostering an inclusive school environment.

Notably, the AEA has supported gender transitions for very young children, including a case where a father transitioned his four-year-old son to living as a daughter. This stance aligns with their broader advocacy for gender identity acceptance in educational settings.
